Forfar Golf Club has announced the next phase of a major investment program following the creation of nearly 30 jobs under its new operator partnership.

In March, members of the 155-year-old club voted to partner with The Ancient Links Golf Company (ALGC) to oversee operations. Since taking over the running of the historic Angus course in the spring, ALGC has created 28 new jobs.

Course and Infrastructure Improvements

Major capital investments are already underway across the course and facilities:

  • Course Renovations: All 78 bunkers have been excavated, reshaped, and renovated.
  • Historical Restorations: The 15th hole, known as 'Braid's Best', has been restored to its original layout.
  • Equipment & Irrigation: Significant investments have been made in the greenkeeping machinery fleet. An entire new irrigation system is being installed to provide greater precision and control for course presentation.
  • Clubhouse Enhancements: Improvements include a revamped locker room featuring a dedicated junior changing area, a redesigned pro shop, and the introduction of a new restaurant.
  • Upcoming Works: An extensive winter works program is planned ahead of the 2027 season.

The club holds a historical distinction as the world’s first 18-hole course designed as such from inception. It was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris and redesigned in 1926 by five-time Open Champion James Braid.

Leadership and Membership Feedback

Forfar Golf Club General Manager Owen Leslie highlighted the course's historic standing while outlining plans for its future:

“Few golf clubs anywhere can claim the history and architectural significance of Forfar. From Old Tom Morris and James Braid to the remarkable rig and furrow landscape, this is a course with a genuinely unique place in the history of the game.

“What has been achieved here since March is extraordinary. In a relatively short period, we’ve transformed significant parts of the course and clubhouse, introduced a new restaurant, invested heavily in our facilities and equipment, and made a real difference to the experience of members and visitors.

“But what is particularly exciting is that this is only the beginning. The next phase represents an even greater commitment, with major investment in the clubhouse and golf course infrastructure that will benefit Forfar for decades to come. We want Forfar to be recognised not simply for its remarkable history, but as one of Scotland’s outstanding golfing experiences.”

Club President Gerald Callander noted that response from the membership—whose program currently involves more than 160 junior golfers—has been strong:

“The response from members to everything that has happened over the past few months has been extremely positive. The improvements to the course, facilities and restaurant have made a real difference.

“For several years, membership numbers remained relatively static. This year we’ve welcomed a significant number of new members, and we’re already receiving enquiries for next season. The opportunity for members to enjoy other courses operated by ALGC at a modest additional cost is another attractive benefit.

“Forfar has always been a special club with a remarkable history. There’s a renewed energy around the club, and members are genuinely excited about both what has been achieved and what’s still to come.”

ALGC Portfolio Expansion and Management Updates

Investor-led ALGC launched its portfolio by taking over operations at Scotscraig Golf Club in Tayport.

The company is currently awaiting a decision regarding a proposed takeover of Montrose Links. The proposed deal involves an investment of £3 million over the first five years of a long-term £30,000-a-year lease. A public consultation on the plan closed last month, with a report being prepared for a full meeting of Angus Council.

In September, The Courier revealed the departure of former director Michael Wells from ALGC. Wells, formerly the chief executive of Carnoustie Golf Links, was a key figure in the setup of the company.
