United Kingdom - Matfen Hall has officially launched its brand new 18-hole championship golf course, The Douglas at Matfen Hall. The launch marks the first major milestone of an ambitious, multi-million-pound golf redevelopment project currently underway at the luxury Northumberland estate.
Following several months of intensive work, the estate’s former Douglas course and Standing Stone course have been completely overhauled. Creators constructed eight new greens on the old Douglas layout and one new green on the Standing Stone course before seamlessly merging the two.
The resulting 18-hole championship course, The Douglas at Matfen Hall, masterfully combines nine newly designed greens with the classic character of the estate's original layout. Golfers can expect a scenic yet challenging experience defined by traditional dry stone walls, natural water obstacles, and the winding River Pont. The estate’s existing nine-hole course, The Dewlaw, remains unchanged.
James Huntly, Head of Marketing at Matfen Hall, celebrated the successful launch after a bustling debut weekend for the new course.
“What a fantastic opening weekend – we had wonderful weather and a great mix of guests and visitors across the two days,” Huntly said. “On Saturday, we opened with The Douglas’ first invitational which was very popular.”
The unveiling of the new course is just the beginning of Matfen Hall's grand vision. Later this summer, the estate will launch The Academy, a state-of-the-art practice facility featuring a 15-bay driving range equipped with Toptracer technology, a Power Tee system, and an all-weather 18-hole putting course.
“The course is now fully open and we’ve now just got a bit more work to complete before we can open The Academy and the rest of the estate,” Huntly added. “We expect this to be ready within a couple of months and to be welcoming our first guests before the summer is out.”
