JÕELÄHTME - Professional-level golf is arriving in Estonia for the very first time this week as the Infortar Estonian Challenge, a premier stage of the HotelPlanner Tour, tees off in Jõelähtme.
With this landmark event, Estonia officially becomes the 52nd nation to host a tournament of this caliber. A field of 156 golfers from around the globe will take to the course, including eight local Estonian professionals eager to showcase their talent on home soil.
"This is a huge deal for Estonian golf, the youth, club players, everyone," said European Team Championship silver medalist Carl Hellat. "It is massive that an event like this has come to Estonia. We have got a bit of a home-course advantage, too. Let us make the most of it."
The significance of hosting the tournament extends far beyond local turf. Under tour arrangements, organizing this professional leg unlocks critical wildcards for Estonia's top golfers to compete in professional tour events abroad. For a squad coming off a silver-medal performance at the European Team Championship just two and a half weeks ago, those foreign starts are essential for bridging the gap to top-tier global circuits.
"The Estonian Golf Association and sponsors have given us the opportunity to play in Estonia and seven additional tournaments abroad. We have been given a great chance to launch a professional career," said golfer Mattias Varjun. "It would be hard to find a better opportunity. The chance is there, and we are trying to make the most of it."
Varjun, who was crowned the Estonian stroke-play champion just a week and a half ago, noted that his preparations have gone smoothly—though the setup will test the field.
"We will play a practice round and see what the course conditions are like. For instance, the greens are definitely a bit firmer and faster than they were a couple of weeks ago. There is less water on the course, and all of that affects how it plays," Varjun explained. "Otherwise, we will go through our usual routines and processes on the practice areas and the course, just as we have done before."
The home crowd won't just be watching local talent; they will see some of the tour’s fiercest competitors. As many as 14 of the top 20 players in the current tour rankings are participating in the Estonian leg. Competitors are arriving from virtually every continent, representing nations ranging from Brazil, Peru, and the USA to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa, alongside a heavy European contingent.
With elite international depth and high stakes for local stars, Jõelähtme is set to host a true milestone weekend for Baltic sports.
