Portugal Invitational Marks Historic Milestone for The Els Club Vilamoura

1 August, 2026

VILAMOURA, Algarve - As the PGA TOUR Champions arrives in Europe for the first time, The Els Club Vilamoura is preparing to step into the global golf spotlight with the inaugural Portugal Invitational.

For Head Greenkeeper Luís Pinto, the arrival of the tournament represents the culmination of more than two years of painstaking work. Having joined the project while Ernie Els’ first private golf club design in Europe was still under construction in 2024, Pinto and his agronomy team now face their biggest test yet: delivering a world-class venue that balances visual presentation with a stern competitive challenge.

“It’s a great feeling to finally have the tournament here,” said Pinto. “None of this would be possible without the dedication and professionalism of the entire greenkeeping team. Everybody is excited, we’re super happy, the team is happy, and we want to have a good week.”

A Career Built on Championship Soil

Pinto brings a wealth of high-level tournament experience to Vilamoura. His background includes two years at the prestigious Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina (2015–2016), a venue renowned for hosting top-tier PGA TOUR events. Pinto subsequently returned to Quail Hollow as a volunteer for both the 2017 and 2025 PGA Championships, as well as the 2022 Presidents Cup.

In Portugal, Pinto established a strong course management record with key roles at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club and as Head Greenkeeper at Ombria Resort before taking the helm at The Els Club Vilamoura. This blend of expertise at established major venues and ground-up course development has shaped his modern, data-driven approach to course preparation.

Tech Meets Sustainability: Cutting-Edge Agronomy

Preparing a new golf course for a 78-player field featuring some of the game's greatest legends requires precise resource management. The Els Club Vilamoura has embraced technology to combine elite performance with environmental sustainability:

  • TurfRad Technology: The club is the first golf course in Portugal to implement TurfRad sensors. Mounted directly onto maintenance machinery, these sensors capture real-time data across fairways and sync with the irrigation system to adjust water applications dynamically.

  • POGO Sensors on Greens: The team uses hand-held POGO sensors to monitor precise moisture levels on every green, enabling targeted hand-watering rather than broad over-irrigation.

“On the fairways, the machine tells us, ‘OK, we need more here, less here,’ and then we can adjust the irrigation,” Pinto explained. “It’s very new and we are the first golf course in Portugal using it.”

The Ultimate Test: Wind, Sand, and Speed

With tournament week requiring "a lot of hand-watering, a lot of mowing, and a lot of long days," the setup team has designed the course to defend itself through precision rather than sheer length:

  • Fast Greens: High green speeds will serve as the course’s main defense.

  • Ernie Els’ Input: Els actively collaborated with course architects to set yardages, define bunker surrounds, and curate native areas to ensure the playing surfaces reflect his original vision.

  • The Key Hole: Pinto identifies the par-three 14th as the toughest test on the property. Guarded by heavy sand and water, it plays directly into the prevailing southerly Algarve wind.

When asked about his ideal winning score for the inaugural champion on Sunday evening, Pinto didn't hesitate: “Ten to 12-under on Sunday would be perfect.”
