Golf Courses Drawn Into UK Housing Debate as Pressure Mounts on Land Use

14 May, 2026

A growing debate over the UK housing crisis has placed golf courses under renewed scrutiny, with commentators and policymakers questioning whether parts of the nation's golfing land could help ease chronic shortages in housebuilding.

Speaking on the podcast Trending Topics with England Golf on Golf Club Talk UK, host Leighton Walker said the issue had “re-emerged” following recent media coverage examining how land occupied by golf clubs could contribute to wider development goals.  He was joined by Gavin Anderson and Kirstin McEvoy of England Golf.

The discussion centred on claims that golf courses account for roughly 2% of land use in the UK, prompting suggestions that some clubs may eventually face pressure to release land for residential development as governments continue to struggle to meet housing targets.

The guests acknowledged the complexity of the issue, noting that opinions are often divided between housing advocates and those within the golf industry.

“There are many facets to it,” acknowledged Gavin Anderson during the episode, adding that golfers and industry professionals would naturally approach the debate from a particular perspective, while the episode aimed to present a broader discussion.

The housing shortage remains one of the UK government’s most persistent policy challenges, with demand for homes continuing to outpace construction in many parts of the country. As a result, attention has increasingly turned towards large areas of privately managed green space — including golf courses — particularly those located near urban centres.

Supporters of redevelopment argue that underused or financially struggling courses could provide valuable land for housing, especially in areas facing acute affordability pressures. Critics, however, warn that golf clubs deliver environmental, recreational and community benefits that are often overlooked in land-use debates.

The podcast episode, titled Golf, Land & Planning: A Positive Perspective, explored how the golf industry may respond to growing political and public pressure surrounding land allocation, planning reform and sustainability.

The debate comes at a time when many golf clubs are already adapting to changing economic conditions, evolving participation trends and increasing expectations around environmental stewardship.
