Ponteland Golf Club Secures Sustainable Future with Borehole Project

1 May, 2026

Ponteland Golf Club has taken a major step forward in its long-term sustainability strategy following the successful completion of drilling work on a new borehole water system.

The project, designed to provide a reliable and cost-effective alternative to mains water, has now reached a depth of 60 metres, with multiple successful water strikes confirming a strong and consistent supply. Drilling at the site near the green sheds on the 18th fairway delivered initial water at 40 metres, with further yields at 47 and 58 metres before completion.

With drilling now finished, the next phase will see pipework connected and the pump system installed, bringing the new supply fully online.

A Long-Term Solution to Rising Pressures

The decision to invest in a borehole was driven by increasing water costs and the growing challenge of maintaining course conditions during drier summers. Previously reliant on mains supply, the club faced pressure limitations during peak irrigation periods, alongside rising operational costs.

Following detailed research and a clear financial case, the borehole project is expected to deliver a return on investment in approximately three years, while significantly improving irrigation consistency across the course.

The move also forms part of a wider strategy at Ponteland to modernise infrastructure, improve sustainability, and reduce reliance on external utilities.

Alongside the borehole, the club has invested in a TrackMan Studio, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing member experience and attracting new audiences.

Leadership Perspective

“This project was really about taking control of our future,” said Candi Watkins. “With rising water costs and increasingly dry summers, relying solely on mains supply just wasn’t sustainable—financially or operationally.

The borehole gives us security, consistency, and a much more cost-effective long-term solution. It allows us to properly protect our most important asset—the golf course—while also giving our team the flexibility they need to maintain standards year-round.

When you combine that with investments like the TrackMan Studio, it’s all part of a wider strategy to modernise the club, improve the member experience, and make sure we’re in a strong position for the future.”

With installation work underway, the project represents a significant investment in the club’s resilience—ensuring high-quality playing conditions and operational stability for years to come.
