Vilamoura has solidified its status as a premier global sporting hub with the announcement of an elite sponsorship deal with Ricardo Melo Gouveia, one of Portugal’s most successful golfers.
The partnership brings the 34-year-old Olympian back to his roots. Gouveia first picked up a club at the Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura at age 10, beginning a journey that would see him graduate from the University of Central Florida and climb into the world’s top 150 golfers.
For Gouveia, the deal is a personal milestone as much as a professional one. Returning to the site of his early training, he reflected on the club's role in his development.
"Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura is where I first started playing golf and where my passion for the game truly developed," Gouveia said. "But it’s more than just a golf club; it feels like family to me. I remember coming here as a junior, practicing with my friends, and meeting my first coach. It gave me the foundation to pursue college in the United States and eventually turn professional."
The golfer also praised the recent evolution of the region, which has undergone a significant transformation under the management platform DETAILS. “It’s a destination with enormous potential and a unique charm... Seeing the infrastructure being renewed, the brands gaining new life, and international events returning here fills me with great joy.”
The sponsorship comes at a high point in Gouveia’s career, following a stellar performance at the DP World Tour’s Kenya Open. Gouveia secured a ninth-place finish with a total score of 16-under-par (264), highlighted by a powerful opening round of 64.
Vilamoura’s investment in Gouveia mirrors its broader strategy to attract elite competition. Over the past year, the town has secured:
Nuno Sepúlveda, Co-CEO at DETAILS, commented:
"Ricardo is one of Portugal’s top golfers and a true competitor in every sense of the word... exactly the kind of athlete we want to stand beside. Our work began with investing in world-class infrastructure, and now we are taking the next step by supporting sport across all levels."
The announcement also highlights the enduring legacy of The Old Course Vilamoura. Recognized as Portugal's Best Course at the 2025 World Golf Awards, the course was established in 1969 and remains the crown jewel of the region’s five championship layouts.
As Vilamoura continues its multi-year development plan—including new luxury residential projects like Botanica and Natura Village—the partnership with Gouveia serves as a bridge between the destination’s storied history and its ambitious future.
