Royal Aberdeen Golf Club captain Laurence McLeod and Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club captain Carron Taylor sign the agreement to unite the two clubs.
Royal Aberdeen Golf Club and Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club have officially merged into a single entity, marking a pivotal milestone in the history of one of the world's oldest golfing institutions.
The formal integration took effect on September 1, 2026, following an initial 2018 vote to permit mixed-gender membership. Club leadership hailed the unification as the "latest step in its evolution," arriving just ahead of the club's upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations in 2030.
Founded in 1780 as The Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, the historic club is the world's premier golfing venue, trailing only Edinburgh’s Royal Burgess Golfing Society in age. The organization adopted the name The Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815 before officially receiving its 'royal' prefix in 1903. Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club was subsequently established in 1892, with both organizations sharing the world-renowned championship Balgownie course and the shorter Silverburn layout for over a century.
The historic agreement was formally signed by Royal Aberdeen captain Laurence McLeod and Aberdeen Ladies captain Carron Taylor.
"This is a landmark day for both clubs and an important day in history," said McLeod. "Most importantly, this integration strengthens the future of golf at Balgownie. It creates a clearer pathway for junior golfers, particularly girls and young women, and brings together two clubs that share a common heritage and ambition."
Taylor echoed those sentiments, noting the strong support from the membership. "This is a proud day for Aberdeen Ladies Golf Club and a positive vote for the future," Taylor said. "Our members have embraced the opportunity to join with Royal Aberdeen in creating a stronger club for future generations. We are particularly excited about the opportunities this creates for young golfers and for the continued growth of women’s golf at Balgownie."
The Balgownie links boasts a rich tradition of hosting elite international events. Notable tournaments include the 2005 Senior British Open, won by eight-time major champion Tom Watson, as well as the Walker Cup and the Amateur Championship. The venue also hosted the Scottish Open, where Justin Rose claimed victory and Rory McIlroy set the still-unbeaten course record of 64.
