AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – The Golf Course Association Europe (GCAE) has officially announced the launch of the European Golf Benchmark, a pioneering initiative designed to move beyond traditional membership numbers and capture the first comprehensive look at the operational reality of golf facilities across the continent.
For years, the industry has relied on membership data to gauge the health of the sport. However, this metric often fails to reflect the day-to-day business performance of facilities. The European Golf Benchmark aims to bridge this gap by collecting real-time operational data, providing a clearer picture of how the sector truly functions.
The project focuses on five key performance indicators that define the modern business of golf:
The initiative is led by the GCAE in partnership with its pan-European membership. The pilot phase is supported by The R&A, with technical infrastructure and data security provided by Players 1st.
Several leading multi-course operators have already committed to the project, including UGolf, GolfStar, and Burhill Group, establishing a robust foundation for the initial dataset.
The benchmark will debut with a pilot group of 80–100 facilities starting in Q2 2026. This initial phase will test the reporting structure before expanding the dataset through the wider GCAE network.
"For the first time, the sector will be able to describe the economic size and operational performance of golf facilities in Europe based on real data from the facilities themselves."
By creating a reliable European dataset, the industry will finally be able to track shifting playing patterns, operational efficiency, and the economic differences between diverse European markets. For facility owners, the benchmark offers a vital tool for comparison within the wider market; for the industry at large, it provides the evidence needed to communicate golf's true economic impact.
The Golf Course Association Europe (GCAE) represents the interests of golf course owners and operators across Europe, focusing on professionalizing the industry and promoting the growth of golf as a sustainable business.
