County Durham’s Headlam Hall Hotel & Rural Retreat has been named the Most Authentic Luxury Rural Retreat & Hotel 2026 – North East England in LUXlife Magazine’s annual Hospitality Awards. The international awards program recognizes hospitality businesses across the globe for setting high industry standards and delivering exceptional guest experiences.
Located in the County Durham countryside, Headlam Hall is an independently owned Jacobean country house hotel situated on the Robinson family’s farm estate. The family acquired the property in 1977 and has since expanded it into a 38-bedroom retreat featuring a spa, a nine-hole golf course, landscaped and walled gardens, lounges, and dining areas.
Throughout its growth, the estate has maintained a focus on personal service, long-standing staff, local partnerships, and its rural surroundings.
The property incorporates local sourcing into its dining options, using produce grown in the hotel’s gardens alongside goods from regional suppliers. Organic dairy is sourced within ten miles, meat is supplied from farms around Barnard Castle, and Teesdale lamb is reared on nearby fells.
Guests at the retreat have access to various activities, including spa facilities, golf, seasonal dining, croquet, classic car experiences, and garden visits. Recent property developments include a new spa terrace, a hydrotherapy pool, and a sauna designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape while maintaining the hotel's traditional character.
Thomas Robinson, Director at Headlam Hall Hotel, emphasized the significance of the award's focus on authenticity.

“We’re delighted to receive this award and especially pleased to be recognised for authenticity because it is something that has always been very important to us. Headlam Hall has grown gradually from our family’s farming roots, but throughout that time we’ve tried to protect the character and sense of place that makes it distinctive,” Robinson said.
“We want guests to be able to properly switch off when they come to Headlam, whether that’s spending time in the gardens, enjoying the countryside or making use of the spa. We also offer seasonal spa treatments throughout the year, giving guests different ways to relax and rejuvenate with each visit.” |
The LUXlife Hospitality Awards evaluate and recognize international hospitality providers, including hotels, resorts, restaurants, and travel experiences, that demonstrate excellence in the sector.
