HUMBERSTON – The nine-hole golf course at Humberston Country Club will officially shut its gates on March 31, after operators declared the facility’s long-term future is "no longer achievable."
The announcement, delivered to members on Tuesday, March 24, marks a definitive end for the course, which has been submerged under floodwaters since late last year. The closure comes amid escalating tensions over proposals to transform the greens into a 249-home residential development.
The Bannatyne Group, which manages the club but does not own the land, cited deep-seated financial issues as the primary driver behind the decision.
"The golf course has not been financially sustainable for some time, and its long term viability is no longer achievable," a Bannatyne Group spokesperson stated. "As a result, the golf course will be closing permanently. We recognise that this will be disappointing for those who use the facility and understand the impact it may have on members."
The closure paves a clearer path for Vistry East Yorkshire, the developer currently eyeing the site. Earlier this year, the firm held pre-application consultations to gauge public sentiment regarding a 249-home masterplan.
However, the transition from leisure to housing faces stiff local resistance:
The course’s fate has been in question for months; it has remained unplayable since late 2025 due to persistent flooding. Because the Bannatyne Group only leases the land, the decision to cease operations effectively hands the site back into the sphere of potential redevelopment.
While the health club and other facilities at Humberston Country Club are expected to continue, the final rounds on the nine-hole course have already been played, leaving the community to wait for a formal planning application that could change the village skyline forever.
