The North Course at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in Portugal has officially reopened following the completion of a six-month renovation program. The reopening marks a new phase of development for the resort, coinciding with planned investments that include a 100-room Nobu hotel, a signature restaurant, and branded residences.
The course upgrade was managed by Details - Hospitality, Sports, Leisure. The decision to temporarily close the layout was taken in April following an assessment of the course and its supporting infrastructure.
Nuno Sepúlveda, co-CEO of Details, stated:

“Monte Rei is one of Portugal and European golf’s most iconic venues and is a must-play course for anyone who loves golf. It was already a great design, so it was important that the work undertaken focused on renewing rather than reinventing it to restore the course to its former glory and put it back where it belongs.” |

Over the six-month closure, Monte Rei’s greenkeeping staff worked alongside the Nicklaus Design team to execute infrastructural and agronomic enhancements. The renovation encompassed:

“Monte Rei’s reopening is a flagship moment for Details and is a clear demonstration of what our company does best: taking a venue with genuine pedigree and untapped potential and investing to bring it back to, and beyond, its best. We’re very proud to have this opportunity to develop and safeguard the long-term future of one of the finest courses in Portugal and Europe, and can’t wait to showcase it to a new audience of golfers.” |
Designed by 18-time Major champion Jack Nicklaus, the North Course originally opened nearly 20 years ago. Senior designer Dirk Bouts of Nicklaus Design emphasized that preserving the original design framework was a core priority during the project.

“Jack Nicklaus and all of us at Nicklaus Design are extremely pleased with the renovation and restoration of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Monte Rei. It is a golf course that Jack has always been immensely proud of, and nearly 20 years after its creation, it remains a very special place, reflecting Jack’s design philosophy and legacy.”
Bouts elaborated on the specific impact of the seasonal closure: “Closing the golf course for the past season provided the opportunity to undertake a comprehensive renovation and carefully restore many of the elements that have made Monte Rei such a special golf experience. The enlargement of numerous tees, the renovation and restoration of the greens and bunkers, together with the extensive clearing work throughout the property, have made a tremendous difference while ensuring that the integrity and character of Jack’s original design have been preserved.” “The result has brought the golf course back to the exceptional standard and presentation that were originally envisioned. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved and very much look forward to seeing golfers return to Monte Rei and once again experience this remarkable golf course as Jack originally intended it to be played and enjoyed.” |
Situated in the foothills of the Eastern Algarve, Monte Rei offers accommodation options including luxury apartments and villas. Non-golf facilities at the property include high-end dining venues, a 24/7 concierge service, a heated swimming pool, a gym, tennis courts, and a children’s play area.
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club forms part of the asset portfolio managed by DETAILS. The company currently manages 23 hotels, 14 golf courses, a sports centre, an equestrian centre, and multiple dining venues.
